OpenAI and advertising

Status

Contrary to some speculation, OpenAI has stated it has no active plans to implement advertising in its products, including ChatGPT and ChatGPT search. This is based on statements from OpenAI leadership.

!
Note. OpenAI's business model and product strategy may evolve. This reflects statements made by OpenAI's leadership at the time of writing, not a standing guarantee.

Official statements

According to OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar:

“Our current business is experiencing rapid growth and we see significant opportunities within our existing business model. While we're open to exploring other revenue streams in the future, we have no active plans to pursue advertising.”
Sarah Friar, CFO, OpenAI

CEO Sam Altman has expressed personal reservations about advertising, particularly in AI products:

“I kind of hate ads just as an aesthetic choice... I like that people pay for ChatGPT and know that the answers they're getting are not influenced by advertisers... it's also easy to think about the dystopic visions of the future where you ask ChatGPT something and it says, ‘Oh, you should think about buying this product...’”
Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI

At Harvard University, Altman further described ads as a “last resort for us”:

“I'm not saying OpenAI would never consider ads, but I don't like them in general, and I think that ads-plus-AI is sort of uniquely unsettling to me.”
Sam Altman, Harvard University

Current business model

OpenAI relies on a combination of revenue streams:

  • Subscription services. ChatGPT Plus and team or enterprise plans.
  • API access. Charging developers and businesses for using their models.
  • Investments. Funding from investors and strategic partners.

OpenAI has not completely ruled out advertising as a potential future revenue stream, but leadership statements indicate it is not part of their immediate plans, with Altman describing it as a “last resort”.

Optimizing content for ChatGPT

5 levers

Even without a formal advertising system, optimizing for visibility in ChatGPT and other AI search results still matters. These are the levers that move it.

01

Focus on clear entity recognition

ChatGPT needs to clearly understand what your business, product or service is. To improve entity recognition:

  • Use consistent branding and naming across all online properties
  • Ensure your website has clear schema markup identifying your business entity
  • Create a Wikipedia page or Wikidata entry if possible
  • Maintain consistent NAP (name, address, phone) information across the web
  • Use clear "About" pages that explicitly state what your business does
02

Develop comprehensive, structured content

ChatGPT favors well-structured, detailed content that thoroughly addresses user questions:

  • Create in-depth content that covers topics comprehensively
  • Use clear headings, subheadings and logical content organization
  • Include FAQs that address common questions in your industry
  • Use tables, lists and structured data to present information clearly
  • Answer specific questions users might actually ask
03

Build authority and trustworthiness

ChatGPT prioritizes information from trusted, authoritative sources:

  • Earn high-quality backlinks from reputable websites in your industry
  • Publish original research, case studies and data-driven content
  • Include citations and references to support factual claims
  • Showcase expertise, credentials and industry recognition
  • Maintain consistent publishing of high-quality content
04

Optimize for semantic understanding

ChatGPT's language model understands concepts, not just keywords:

  • Focus on topic coverage rather than keyword density
  • Use natural language that flows conversationally
  • Include related concepts, terms and entities
  • Address user intent comprehensively
  • Create content that connects ideas logically
05

Maintain factual accuracy and freshness

ChatGPT prioritizes accurate, up-to-date information:

  • Regularly update content to reflect current information
  • Include dates on time-sensitive content
  • Correct inaccuracies promptly
  • Provide the latest industry data and statistics
  • Add new information as it becomes available

Technical optimizations

Strategic robots.txt configuration

Allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl your site while keeping control over what gets indexed:

robots.txt
# Allow OpenAI search bot
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

For finer control of OpenAI crawlers, see the OpenAI crawlers and user agents reference.

Enhanced schema markup

Implement comprehensive schema markup to help ChatGPT understand your content:

  • Organization schema with a clear description and identifiers
  • Product schema with detailed attributes
  • FAQ schema for questions and answers
  • HowTo schema for instructional content
  • LocalBusiness schema for location-based businesses

Measuring success

Traditional SEO metrics do not fully capture performance in AI search. Four things worth watching instead:

AI mention tracking

Monitor how often and in what context your brand is mentioned in ChatGPT responses.

Conversational analytics

Analyze the quality and context of AI-generated content referring to your brand.

Prompt performance

Test different prompts to see which ones return results featuring your content.

Competitive positioning

Compare how your brand features in AI responses versus competitors.

Common questions

Does traditional SEO still matter for ChatGPT?

Yes, but with different emphasis. Backlinks and traditional rankings still contribute to establishing authority, but ChatGPT places more weight on comprehensive content, semantic relationships and factual accuracy than on signals like keyword density.

How often does ChatGPT update its information?

ChatGPT's knowledge is updated periodically by OpenAI. For current information it may use its browsing feature to access real-time web data. Keeping your content fresh and accurate increases the chances of being referenced in those browsing sessions.

Is there advertising in ChatGPT?

As of the statements below, no. OpenAI said it had "no active plans to pursue advertising" through its CFO, Sarah Friar. CEO Sam Altman has expressed personal reservations about advertising in AI products, describing it as a "last resort". OpenAI has focused on subscription revenue and API access as its primary business model.

Will ChatGPT add advertising in the future?

OpenAI has not completely ruled out advertising as a future revenue stream, but leadership statements suggest it was not part of their immediate plans. Reports indicate they would be “thoughtful about when and where” they might implement it.
